I can really relate to this. “I really like what Spinoza said about that” … “Well haven’t you read Hume? That’s exactly what he says.” … “Of course, early Wittgenstein would disagree with you.”
The joys of parties attended by many philosophy students! But my anxiety disappears when I realize this name-dropping doesn’t indicate these other students have read more than me. Indeed, they may have just read a summary of western philosophy! There’s no real philosophy being discussed here.
There’s so much philosophy to read, no one could possibly read it all and take it all seriously.
